Life hacks I live by
I know this sounds self explanatory, but most people struggle with decision making, whether it be deciding what to eat for dinner, what color to paint your kitchen cabinets, or what to wear.
As a therapist, a simple confidence builder I always offer is this: when given the opportunity to make a decision, make the decision. And most importantly, be okay with the decision being wrong.
For example, I had a client who went out to dinner with her spouse and was asked whether they wanted to sit inside or outside. She said outside. Five minutes later her partner was far too cold. She apologized, said she thought it would be more romantic, and they both went inside.
That is it. That is the whole story. Nothing was ruined. The night went on. But she practiced something most people avoid, which is committing to an answer and tolerating the possibility of being wrong.
Making a decision when given the opportunity helps instill confidence and comfort. Avoiding the decision does the opposite. When you pass it off, are you are quietly telling yourself that your preference is not worth stating, or that being wrong is worse than being unsure.
